Last Friday Night, Long Lake provided the backdrop to the end of the 2013 regular season. Going into the tournament, there was plenty up for grabs, in terms of TOC spots and points standings. The only thing really for certain was John had basically wrapped up the Mr. Bass title already. The last TOC spot was hotly contested, and all vying for it were in the tournament. Between David, Greg, and Corey there was only a difference of about 40 points. One of them wasn't going to make it..... Corey and partner Pete blew the rest of us out of the water with a limit weighing 15.7 lbs, which was over two lbs better than 2nd. David and his brother Jake struck gold after dark, adapting very well to the fact their primary plan (slop) wasn't working. They boated a 13.13 lb limit, good for 3rd, and a TOC spot for David. That just left Greg, who didn't fare as well (join the club . He and partner Dan came up short on this one. So this left Greg out of the TOC....... or did it? No, in fact an extra spot was created by a last second new member added to the roster. In the end, all three made the TOC. 2nd place went to John and guest. They had a 13.37 lb limit.
The other tight race was for 3rd place in the final standings, and possibly 2nd. Clyde and guest brought in a very heavy 10.3 lb 3 fish bag, including big bass for the night. Way to go Clyde, for holding on to a very respectable 2nd place, and snagging yet another big bass this year. Brian and Steve were within 7 points of each other for 3rd place...... but fished together, thus eliminating the chance of Steve gaining 3rd, unless he and Brian outfished Clyde by a pretty wide margin. As mentioned, Clyde put a quick stop to that. The same scenario existed for Virgil, but he and his guest didn't catch enough fish to pass either Brian or Steve. After final TOC standings were determined, Brian took 3rd place over Steve by exactly one point!! As it turns out, that last second cull on Pool 7 was the difference. Wow.
The field of 7 boats brought in a total of 32 bass, for 72.79 lbs.
Next meeting is Sept 18th at Hitters. We'll form the TOC committee, and elect new officers for the 2014 season, which officially starts in October. Also anyone wanting to submit bylaw changes has until the start of the November meeting to submit them.
PS: September's meeting counts for the 2013 standings.....

Great! Mark, Pete, and Mike round out the TOC committee. The bylaws dictate 4 lakes are put into the hat to draw from. Lakes must be within 100 mile radius of Appleton and not have been fished this season. Start thinking!

Thinking!?!?! That might be asking a little too much of us Brian.

I had a neat idea, I was viewing our club schedule and it says TOC weekend September 21-22. Have we ever considered doing a weekend TOC?

Two Days...I would think if this were to actually happen, then the TOC committee would have to get together earlier so we could get hotel rooms.

Just reading through the By-Laws and the section regarding the TOC committee reads like this;
C: Two regular active FVBC members will be chosen to act as tournament directors, however they may not be TOC contestants. The names of four (4) bodies of water will be placed in a hat and one will be drawn by a FVBC officer. That lake will be off limits and secret to all contestants until the night before the Tournament of Champions. At 6:00 PM of the night preceding the TOC, the tournament directors will notify each of the TOC contestants as to the location and official checkpoint of the tournament. The TOC cannot be any body of water fished within that year.
That said, Brian - just let us know for sure what 2 members will make up the TOC committee.
As for 1 or 2 days, I really think 1 day is plenty and the easiest way to manage things. Mark B "A Jerk at one end of a line waiting for a jerk at the other end ..."

Two day would require a by-law change. By-law says TOC is third weekend in September with the actual "date" (singular) chosen when the other tournament dates are chosen. Sunday is pretty much a back-up day in case of bad weather.

Yeah as far as the TOC committee, I thought Mark and Pete would have the ultimate decision on which four lakes are entered, but Mike would be a great resource as to lake ideas. I discussed as much with Mark over the weekend. I know in years past there has been more than two guys involved with lake discussion, but again the two committee members are deciding on the four lakes.

I agree Brian. Mike and I discussed this yesterday and figured if there are others that want to kind of advise the committee with lake info it can only help to make for a better TOC. I know two years ago Mike and Tom L. were the committee and I was allowed to give input on the lake discussion. Good idea.
